About the Symposium

1st International Symposium on Perception of Islamic Sciences Today: Perception of the Sunnah

After the death of the Prophet (PBUH), Islamic sciences has realized its formation and development in a historical perspective. In time, these sciences separated from each other and their intersecting and diverging points in sub-disciplines became clearer. The same branch of science has been subjected to different evaluations due to the cultural, local and sociological perceptive variations. This difference and change have continued until today, since the guidance of regional developmental level and the prevailing scientific, cultural and sociological approach is an inevitable reality in interpretation of Islamic sciences. Especially with the influence of modernity and globalization, our traditional scientific approach and the terms of these sciences has undergone a differentiation of meaning and semantic shifts. On the one hand, an enormous accumulation in historical process, on the other hand semantic shifts and semantic extensions of the age have triggered the timeliness of these issues. With the main heading “Perception of the Islamic Sciences Today”, we are happy to announce that we are planning to organize a long-term symposium series. We aim to bring the first of that symposium series with the subtitle “Perception of the Sunnah” to the attention and evaluation of our scientists. Current Islamic science and concept discussions mostly revolve around the term “Sunnah”. These discussions have influenced the selection of the subtitle.
These symposiums will be organized by joint effort and will be hosted in rotation by the Bayburt University Faculty of Theology, Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University and Karabük University. The first symposium themed “Perception of the Sunnah” will be hosted by Bayburt University Theology Faculty and it will continue with different subtitles hosted by our other faculties in the upcoming years. We hope it will lead to long-term cooperation and productive meetings.
