For more than two centuries, the search for new methods in Islamic sciences have emerged for various reasons. There have been efforts to understand and interpret the Qur’an and Sunnah with a new method, and new theories have been put forward about our understanding of religion. Abandoning the understanding of classical method, the suggestions of method based on maqasid, maslaha, custom and sociology have been made. With respect to the understanding of Qur’an and Sunnah, there were also those who advocated interpreting them from a historicist point of view by expressing the historicity of their circumstances. There have been theories that suggest abandoning the classical understanding of revelation and propose new understandings of revelation, as well as abandoning the Sunnah and arguing that we should adopt a religious understanding based on solely on our usage of the Qur’an. There are also approaches that suggest changes in our understanding of knowledge, the universe and religion by utilizing modern sciences. Also, the search for new methods and revitalization of religion continues for the endurance of religious affiliation. During this whole process, there are also semantic shifts and changes in many concepts related to Islamic sciences. The search for new methods has been spoken and discussed in almost all Islamic sciences, especially in fiqh, tafsir, hadith and kalam.
We felt the need to organize this symposium, thinking that the reasons for these new method searches in Islamic sciences, the theories put forward, whether there is a need for new methods, their effects on Islamic sciences, their positive and negative aspects, their acceptable or unacceptable aspects, whether the methods they offer propose concrete solution, their equivalent in the world of science and society, whether their results are sound methods or not should be examined and discussed.
The first of the International Symposium on Perception of Islamic Sciences Today organized by the collaboration of the Faculties of Theology of Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, Bayburt University and Karabuk University had been done on “the perception of Sunnah”. In this symposium to be held for the second time, we expect to contribute to the world of science with studies evaluating “searches for new methods” in the fields of fiqh, tafsir, hadith, kalam, mysticism and Islamic history.
